  6. The SBI is an index showing the relative health of the shareware
  7. industry by showing the change in registration sales for shareware
  8. programs.  It is based on a starting point of 100 points for
  9. January 1989.  Thus the SBI shows how much shareware registrations
  10. have increased (or decreased) since January 1989.  The following
  11. index is based on the registration sales reported as of June 08,
  12. 1992.

  14. Twelve authors are now participating in the SBI.  We very much need 
  15. and would welcome your participation.

  18. Calculation Method
  19.  
  20. A month to month percentage change in sales is calculated for each
  21. author.  An average percentage change is then calculated for
  22. each month and that percentage is applied to the previous month's
  23. SBI index.  This method does not show the overall size of the
  24. shareware industry, but will accurately reflect its growth and
  25. cycles.  The index starts in January 1989 with an arbitrary setting
  26. of 100.

  29. Background

  31. This index was calculated for the first time in May 1992.  This update
  32. includes sales figures through May 1992.  As additional authors
  33. submit join the SBI and send us their sales information (we need **
  34. you ** to send us your sales monthly history) the SBI will improve
  35. and be more accurate and useful in determining sales trends based
  36. on the time of year and longer term trends based on general
  37. economic conditions.  In addition, as more authors contribute their
  38. sales information the SBI may be able to include sales trends by
  39. market and/or product type.

  42. Contributing Sales Information

  44. To make the SBI a better refection of the true shareware economy we
  45. would appreciate it if ** you ** could submit your monthly sales
  46. information.  This information will be kept strictly confidential. 
  47. Information can be submitted in either of two forms: monthly sales
  48. (non-US authors, your information can be in any currency) or the
  49. percentage change in sales each month.  The percentage change is
  50. calculated using the following formula:
